Spraying food plots

Yearling... With promise
I’m nEw to this site and heard great things, I was wondering what products are safe to spray for weeds in certain food plots. I’m looking to make a few different food plots and the first being with the product whitetail institute power plant? What’s safe to spray in this product? The second product is the whitetail institute tall tine tubers or any type of turnips? The last product is soybeans? Thanks for the help!

No generic answer here it all depends on what's in the plot. Herbicides are either non selective (kill almost everything)
And selective (kills target plants). Usually separated into grass or broadleaf.

Then there are GMO crops engineered to be resistant to non selective herbicides. Usually "Round up Ready". Which can be sprayed with glyphosate or "Liberty link" which is sprayed with Liberty herbicide.

Check out Willy's post here http://habitat-talk.com/index.php?t...food-plot-crop-crp-nwsg-and-trees.8705/unread
But don't try to open it on a mobile device the file is to large.

And or list what plants are in those mixes so we can offer some options.

As far as beans go they must be GMO to control any broadleaf weed. Grass can be controlled in any bean with Clethodin.

Also no herbicide to control broadleaf weeds in turnips. Clethodin can again be used to control many grasses.
Best to get a good burn down with a non selective herbicide before planting brasicas. Another option is to shallow disk several times during the spring and early summer before planting turnips. This will bring the weed seed in the seed bank to the top, allow it to germinate and terminat it the next time you disk.

Thanks I’ll check it out

Don't quote me, but I've seen where dow sells a chem called tordon max designed to be sprayed over the top of forage brassicas. I imagine it's costly, and don't really know anything else about it, but happened across it once while researching.

YIKES! I just read part of the T-Max label. It is safe on brassica's but they say not to spread animal manure from animals that grazed on it for 12 weeks and that animal manure is residue free after feeding on non treated feed for 4 days.

Probably legal overkill in that warning but I wouldn't want the deer to be walking around killing plants when they take a dump :)

Craig Harper wrote an excellent article titled "Herbicide Primer" in Quality Whitetails several years ago (~2012?)

You may find that to be helpful. I did.

With brassicas, spray your plot with glyphosate, wait 2 weeks disc if you want and plant. Don't plant more than a 1/4 inch deep. Brassicas will grow very quickly and outcompete most weeds and grasses. Fertilized well and with good moisture, you'll have a weed free brassica plot.

Thanks for response I’ll try that

Nothing is going to work on the mix in "Power Plant." Get a good burndown, and plant with adequate soil moisture to get fast germination.
