PGC Howard Nursery update

Bowsnbucks

5 year old buck +
I did some checking and the Howard Nursery has a note on it's website that says 2018 seedling sales are suspended due to lack of surplus seedlings. They say sales will again be ready for 2019.

That's good news for any who buy from them. Good seedlings - cheap.

I got Chinese Chestnut seedlings from them 2 years ago and they are growing great, some over 7 ft tall already. Last year i could never get through to them on the phone, I ended up getting swo, buttonbush and persimmon from my county conservation sale for around a dollar a piece.

I have ordered the last few years using their PDF form. Once filled out, the form calculated the price and emails the order to the PGC. I still have to call in the payment info. I had trouble getting them on the phone last year to do that. After i sent an email, a manager called me to get my payment info.

I placed a call to the nursery and got their voice-mail. I left a message to call me back, but haven't heard from them yet. Holiday break maybe. They've always called me back prior to this call. I'll post what I find out.

Update - I talked to the Howard nursery today and got the story right from the horse's mouth. The lack of a seedling sale to the public this year is caused by budget cuts by the state legislature which is controlled by Republicans. They haven't funds for staff and supplies and some of their existing staff is on a day-to-day basis. The lack of staff last year resulted in less seedlings being planted, and some of those failed due to lack of care by few staff. The only seedlings they have for sale this year are for school fund-raising projects.

They advise all Pa. residents interested in a future for the Howard Nursery to contact their representatives to get it funded fully again. Pressure the elected. They've always had good seedlings cheap.

Sad to hear but not surprised.

Thanks for the update Bows. Sad to hear. I hope they don't close it, I usually order from them each year and have never had any issues.

I've bought stuff from Howard Nursery for over 25 years. It's a real bummer if they close. They told me to ask people to contact their elected representatives to pressure them for funding. I'm alerting all the members of my camp and letting the Pa. guys on here know. Best we can do for now.
