Millet?

I'm wanting to plant some millet for winter quail feed.
How do you guys plant it?

I planted a pheasants forever mix that contained millet. I disked up the ground, then broadcast the seed on top of the soil then followed with a light drag pulled behind an ATV. It worked well.

It has been a while since I've used it, but simply broadcast and cultipack or drag works. Doesn't need more tillage than scratching up the surface a bit as long as weed competition is under control.

Thanks,

Jack

Thanks

Til to prepare a seed bed, broadcast, and drag or cultipack. There are all types of millet with all lengths of maturity date. They also vary in stem persistence. For your application, I think you would want a more robust variety that will stand erect for a longer period. You dont want it maturing too soon, either - because every passing bird will clean the heads before November gets here.

I am hoping to use it around a nice pond I have with the hopes of attracting ducks. My plan is to burn the swamp grass ( I think it's canary grass) then spray it once is get about a foot tal then broadcast Jap Millet ariund August 1st. Thoughts on this plan?

Jap millet will germinate well on a mudflat. If the ground you are broadcasting on to is not fairly wet, germination may be poor - especially in August. But, you dont really need to plant jap millet for ducks much before August

I planted 100 lbs of jap millet last year. First while quail like it, there are other foods I planted this year quail like better. I planted it around my pond and and also about 1 acre in the south field. I mowed the field mostly leaving standing strips. The turkeys love it and hammered it hard. Everyday you see turkeys in it. Pond never filled so turkeys pounded that too. It’s dirt cheap.

Here is a pic of my quail feed
