Mature Buck Kill

Congrats. He's nice!

Any history with him?

Smile ... you did good ...:emoji_thumbsup:

Congrats!

Bill- no history since this is my first year hunting the property. I helped this farmer hay this year ( many of times) hoping he would let me hunt after all the time I put in with him. I asked him at the end and he said yes. I was more than excited. He doesn’t let anybody else hunt. I’ve seen a couple small bucks I passed on, but his property has many doe living on it. I knew it wouldn’t be long before a big one would be hanging with the doe.

Thx guys.

Great job, great deer.

Well done. Farmers appreciate help and hard work. No better way to win favor with a farmer.

Congrats! Did you pull the jawbone? It would be interesting to see the age.

Jack- No I didn’t. I’m curious myself. I dropped it off at the taxidermist .
John- thx.

Bet if you call the taxidermist before he skins it out, he will age it for you. Around here, if you ask, taxidermists will pull jawbones and save them for you. Racks by themselves are a pretty not a real accurate gauge of age and they vary quite a bit based on location. On my place, that deer would likely age at 2 1/2 but could possible go 3 1/2. In other locations that could be different. It took us quite a few years to get a handle on what a 2 1/2 year old looks like compared to an older deer. We've shot a lot of them while learning. I live about 80 mile away from our farm. Near where I live, that deer would more likely be 3 1/2 than 2 1/2.

Thanks,

Jack

I’d be willing to bet a large amount of $$ it’s not a 2.5 year old for around my area. I would have guessed 4.5, but I could be wrong. I’d be shocked to find out it’s a 3.5 for here. I might just give him a call tomorrow.

Different areas are different. That's why I thought it would be interesting to have it aged. I've taken to saving the jawbone, cleaning them up good, and spraying them with epoxy.

For my place the key distinguishing features between a 2 1/2 and 3 1/2 as far as rack go are the brow tines and mass. A rack will the same width and other characteristics but with more mass would like be 3 1/2.

Yup. I understand. I’m going to see what he says when I call him.

Beautiful buck you got there BobinCt! I'd wager quite a bit on that deer being older than 2.5. Great example of stocking up the karma points and then cashing them in.

Nice buck!

Thx guys-
I texted the taxidermist this morning and he said 4.5 yr old as well without me giving him my guess. I decided not to have him pull the jawbone after watching a video of it on YouTube . Just don’t want anything to go wrong. He is scoring it as well so I will let you know what the final number is.

great buck!!

AWESOME DEER!!! Glad to see your hard work, (with the farmer), paid off!!! An example for others to follow to gain permission to hunt!!!

Congrats. I say low to mid 140s'. A well balanced 10 pointer.
