Live from the stand thread

Looks like a heckuva bedding area in those evergreens, Bueller. Probably real calm in there on windy days. Nice area to watch.

I decided to give my stand a break this afternoon and hit up some public land. So far I had some one shoot across a valley at a little fawn, that was about 20 yards from me, and it ran off. They then proceeded to take a drone out and circle the area over and over. Meanwhile as I am sitting in the public land, I get a picture sent to my phone from one of my cameras, and I haven’t been missing anything. Just a little fawn there as well. If look close, in it he background is my empty blind.

All right Bueller the rest of the Orange Army will start to show up again and help you out.

I passed on a long shot at a small buck. Pops saw the same scrubby 8 pointer as the night before but this time took a shot at him. He texted me "I think I hit him". Not very promising from someone with a history of poorly hit, gut shot deer. I told him to look for blood in the food plot before it gets dark. We meet up afterwards and he was down in the dumps, said he found nothing. We went back to the scene and I found a sparse blood trail, deja vu I thought. This time however the blood although spotty was nice bright red blood. It wasn't the easiest blood trail to follow but it did lead us to his buck. Shot placement was good and caught the top of both lungs but for whatever reason it didn't leave the best trail and the deer traveled quite some distance before going down. He is thrilled and I'm thrilled for him.

Bueller,
Congrats to Pops! I've been scarce around here. Just settled my son in for his last morning hunt. This 4:30 am everyday thing is wearing on me. :)

Yep. He introduced me to deer hunting when I was a teen. Many years of public land with few deer. He eventually bought a 40 acre parcel that we've been fortunate enough to see and harvest deer consistently on. My habitat trials and errors began on his place. I have since bought my own piece of land in the area. It's not Waupaca, Iowa, etc... but it's ours and do our best with it. It was only a couple years ago that his interest in deer hunting hit an all time low and we even thought he may hang it up in the coming years. So planting the food plot on his land, tracking his blood trail, field dressing his deer, and dragging his deer out of the woods is only re-paying him a fraction of what I really owe him.

Back in the stand for the final push. Not expecting much. The guys hunting behind me have been baiting consistently since middle of October and my deer sightings and pics have gone off a cliff in correlation. The few pics I do get are mostly at night now.

So far 16 sits between bow & gun ... approximately 65-70 hours in the stand ... some days I have had 25-30 deer in front of me ... why do we hunt, because we can ... :emoji_relaxed:

Not to jack your post but this is why I do it! School doesn't let him get here til the 7th day of rifle is over. He burned 8 hours a day every day. 4 in the AM, 4 in the PM for 6 days. We pull out in the morning and I told him this AM was his last sit with the cross bow. Then I caved and figured if I let him hunt this afternoon he would ruin my evening. HE DID! We just finished butchering a deer and my A$$ is dragging....

And a "thanks" to North Mo, we set the decoy up and it kept the deer occupied on anything but hunters.

I thought this deer was a crossed horn 8. Turns out to be a high, tight 11 with the little stickers on the brows. 245 lbs live weight, 142 7/8 green gross. Not bad for your first crossbow kill.

Dad hasn't put one on the ground. But I'm good with that...

Mega-congrats to your son AND you, Bill! Got to love that smile on his face! Though doesnt exactly look like he feels guilty for ruining your evening. :emoji_wink::emoji_thumbsup::emoji_beers:

Great buck. I've never seen beams like that. Congrats

Quiet morning here so far. No deer seen and no gunshots heard.
