late dropping pear trees have lots of fruit this year

willy

5 year old buck +
This is the 5th season they have been in the ground at my place. They have had fruit on in some capacity since their third year but this year they have enough that I should be able to see if they have drawing power.

The trees are trophy and giovani pear. The trophy are big traditional pear shaped and the gio are baseball shaped and just shy of as big as a baseball.

My keiffers are loaded but I didn't take pics of them.

The more upright trees are the giovani the others are the trophy

Wow! Looking great!!

Yes, those look great. Where are you located?

You say "late dropping" - what sort of time frame are you talking about? Lots of folks interested in "late dropping" fruit. I have been told pears are easier than apples to work with and I have had some struggles with apples so I am very interested in your pears. I'm trying to get fruit as late in the year as possible as my hunting season doesn't open until 10/1 and firearms isn't until mid November.

Native, I am located in southeast NE.

J-bird, The trophy pears said Oct-Nov dropping times and the Giovani said NOv=Dec drop time. We shall see as with this amount on them if those dates are correct there should be fruit on when the seeking and chasing phases are going, and into the the Dec cold front/storm hunting opportunities.

If they hold true to there word I will be VERY interested in getting my hands on some. PLEASE keep us updated as your year progresses as to how they pan out for you. Have you had any issues with them thus far?

Will do

Well most of the pear trees pictured above lost their pears the last week of Oct during several days of sustained 30 mph winds with 40-50 mph gusts. that The one that didn't was protected more from the wind but it only has a handful left.

At another locale I have some "improved Kieffer" pears that have been in the ground 4 years that werent as loaded as the ones above but they have a couple dozen pears on each of them still. It is protected from wind so that may have been the difference.

Good information. Thanks for sharing.

Are the Giovani readily available? Or do you think I might be able to get a cutting?

T

T, remind me next Feb. and I can cut you a couple scions.

That would be great!

Thank you!

In the past I've read where the Giovani pears are quite susceptible to fire blight...has anyone seen that? I have several of Doc's Special Special pears that were originally sold by Edwards Fort Nursery...same nursery that originally sold the Giovani pear. My Doc's Specials have not produced much at this point and they've been in the ground since 2011.

I never took any photos but I watched a seedling pear this fall near my house. There is a group of trees along the road. I always thought they dropped by October but one tree held pears until just last week. Would hbe a nice draw for archery.

Sorry to resurrect an old thread, but any updates on your late dropping pears now that they’ve been bearing a few years?

Last year's severe late frosts pretty much destroyed all fruit. If there were 200 apples and pears combined on the farm that would have been it. The Giavani still had pears on them until december. One thing that has occurred to the giovani trees is major branches have snapped off after very high winds, even one on the truck. This was last year with hardly any fruit on them. They seem to be brittle. The keiffer and trophys are doing fine, as long as there isn't a late, severe frost. This year it looks like there may be a banner production. There were light freezes but I think we might have made it through without too much damage.

I wouldn't plant giovani again but trophy and kieffer for sure. I've planted a dozen asian pears in last couple years and if they produce like the others I planted 9 years ago, they will be gold mines for deer and humans alike.

How did your pears end up this season Willy? Still holding? Giovan’s still brittle? Thanks for any updates.

A little late but all the Giovanni have snapped off. Kieffer and trophy had lots of pears.
