Lack of rain and foodplot question

ToddG

5 year old buck +
I planted my food plots early September with WR and Durana clover and got a couple of rain storms the following week. Everything germinated and you could see the small clover. I haven't received any rain since. The WR still looks great but I can't see much clover now. Do You think it died? If so, what are my choices? I didn't want to have to replant my plots in the spring.
Thanks,

I'm kind of in the same boat. I'm hoping that there's still going to be some clover that survives. I reseeded some of my cereal grains this week. I figure either way I was going to frost seed a little extra clover next spring anyway. Clover seed isn't too expensive so if it looks like the clover just isn't there I'll frost seed a mix of ladino and Kopu II in the spring at about 6 lbs per acre and see what happens. If there is some clover that makes it then I'll just frost seed it a little lighter.

Keep an eye out when it rains again but it might be toast. I wouldn't reseed the clover in VA now. To much chance of frost in the next 30 days. (Watch since I said that it will be warm til Christmas.

I'd frost seed some more in March.

You will be fine. Looks like rain coming for the first week of archery. Go hunt!

Same situation here but I was able to re-seed the day of a decent rainfall. Not as much as I would like but hopefully enough to get germination. South Mississippi

If it is toast, will frost seeding in March work out so I don't have to re-plant in spring?

I also mixed in some chicory and it is doing great without the rain. I sure hope the clover will bounce back

You might have seeds that are still waiting to germinate--see what happens after you get some rain.jmo

I wouldn't worry about the clover. I planted late last year and thought the clover didn't make it, I was mowing clover by late April.

Durana is a HARDY clover. If it germinated, it will be OK. We aren't in a drought, we have only had a couple weeks without rain. Keep monitoring it but I'll bet it will come alive as soon as we get some rain. Check the clover in March and if it is thin or has a few bare spots, top dress it with some additional seed and you'll have a Great clover plot come May.

Thanks for all the help and suggestions. I had been planting Buckwheat every spring but decided to try clover so I could skip the spring plantings.

I agree with the reseeding in March, over seeding then even if some of the first planting shows up isn't a bad idea. I mix chicory in with mine too, it gives the deer some variety to browse on.

Here in va we have had some good rain since your original post....did you receive rain ? If do what does your clover look like ?

I'd wait at least one more week to evaluate it.

I just took a quick look yesterday and I think it is starting to come back. I will keep you posted.
Thanks,
