Quite possible, but hard to be certain with still attached to tree. can you pull off a chunk and show the underside and the attachment point to the tree? CoW should be stemless and smooth on the under

I am guessing not. Chicken of the woods is solid and not ribbed?

Ripped on top, smooth on the bottom, should be no spore holes or ribs on the underside, correct

not chicken of the woods.

first pic, the top few yellow mushrooms looks like chanterelles, second pick I'm pretty sure is jack o latern mushroom. Chanterelles are excellent eats, jack o laterns will kill you.

Is it growing out of wood, or soil? Never seen chants growing out of wood. Also, the "gills" run down the stem and blend into it. They don't have an abrupt stopping point or edge to where they end.
As far as shrooming goes; when in doubt, throw it out.

Both picks are of the same mushroom.
I believe you are correct jack o lantern.

Definitely, not a chicken of the woods. Almost positive that is a poisonous Jack O lantern. Probally wont kill you but will send you to the hospital and make you wish you were dead. A lot of people get poisoned thinking these are chickens or chanterelles. They are not chanterelles either. Chants never grow on wood, are more of a yellow,(except for the tiny cinibars) and have false gills running down into the stem, not the fine true gills like the pic shows.
