If you have chestnut trees...

I am going to try to graft these this year. I had a guy show me how he does it. If you have some late droppers we can give it a try!

I will let you know. My guess is that if we are still dropping mid October we will be lucky - but we will see.

Here are some chestnut trees out in the tree planting. The deer will get these. I could take the DR and mow under them and get the nuts, but have all we need from the ones in the road.

How old are those trees?

How old are those trees?

Those in that last picture are not some of the oldest ones. I'm going to say around 7 - 9 years as a guess. And keep in mind, those are in a harsh environment and never watered or fertilized.

I checked the local park on Monday and nothing had opened yet. This afternoon, Friday, a number of burrs were open on the ground but nuts were gone. I was hoping to get my first taste of the year. Most burrs in the trees have not opened. Should get a rain shower tonight. Will take my girls out for breakfast in the morning and stop by again. Will be down to the farm in PA this weekend and those should have been dropping for a week or so now.

As of October 1:

  • Several tree have been finished for many days.
  • A few trees just beginning to drop.
  • Several trees half way finished
  • Two trees that have not opened a single burr or dropped a single nut yet.

This is what it looks like where a deer eats a chestnut.

This is an example of a tree about 1/2 way finished.

Here are the two trees that don't appear to be close to dropping yet:

I got a few handfuls of chestnuts from my parent's farm. Usually just a single nut per burr so I guess pollination wasn't that good this year. Still many burrs to open on their trees.

Burrs haven't opened up yet here either, just starting to turn a little brown.

Of the few burrs I had hope for I got 1 good nut and 2 poor ones out of each bur. I'm happy with that. I have the "good" ones in the fridge with hope to plant come spring. Once I get more actual production I will try to see when they actually drop, since I wanted to be certain I got to them before the deer/squirrels did this year! Having some that drop later in October would be the ticket I think, but not sure if that is something you can really control or simply gather nuts from a late dropper and hope the resulting tree continues the same traits.....

They finally started popping open here, I picked two hatful's of burs should have probably got to them sooner lots of open burs on ground with nuts gone. These are my first Dunstan's to nut, I have had them out for three years they are 9'-12' tall. The plan is to stratify as many as I can and direct seed into my shrub strips in early spring, I put the burs out on kitchen table in sun so they can finish opening up this week.

Proof that you can grow chestnuts in NW Wisconsin... Dunn County Zone 4a

I was told once that we are to far north they will never grow and if they do they will never produce nuts, I'm glad I didn't listen... These are off a <15 foot tree and while I do have some immature nuts I was happy to have another repeat year of viable nut production...

There is one chestnut tree in S.E. MN. that I know of. It is in a valley where it would receive plenty of spring frosts and it produces quite a few nuts. I have never seen any evidence of deer eating them though. I should get some nuts from that tree to plant but never seem to have enough time to get to all the things I need to do let alone the things I want to do.

As of today here is the report:

  • One young Chinese tree has some burs that have not yet opened. The burs on this tree looks small to me - like they have only one or two nuts or none at all. So nothing to get excited about on this one until I check it again next year.
  • A young Dunstan that had only one large bur this year has not opened up yet. The bur appears to be big enough to have 3 nuts and is still very green at this time. This is one to watch next year too.
  • All other trees have finished dropping. The ground is littered with evidence of the deer cleaning them up.

Excellent to see and hear this. I just put 3lbs in the fridge from Chestnut Ridge and they will go in soil that is just south of you in 2018 sometime.
