Help me pick my trees!

Same here! The description sounds almost too good to be true. They're $30 for 25 of them through NY state. I think for that price I'll try to get some next year if I don't find any other reasonable sources.

The zone description varies from 3 to 6 depending on where you look so it's possible there are more cold hardy versions out there. I'm in zone 5 too.

My state doesn't sell trees anymore, and none of the counties near here sell chinkapins. I haven't figured out how to get trees from Ontario yet. I heard the province has a reforestation program, but the land I hunt is already reforested.

Sounds like you are in a good position to try them. Plant 25 per year, then plant all the acorns you get. Then name your cold hardy strain Kingkong Megabuck SuperRack DCO, and sell it for lots of money.

Yeah I'm already hooked. I will buy a notebook and keep a journal on my experiences. I never knew apples could be so interesting.
I started journaling and ended up Vlogging. I use my Youtube channel as a Vlog. https://www.youtube.com/user/ProfKSE
Nice videos and good way of documenting progress! That's quite a fence that you put up. I'm debating on doing something similar or building cages around all the trees.

I'm working on clear cutting the future orchard now. It's a race to get it all done before the trees show up for planting.

I have done individual fencing and enclosed-orchard fencing. It is cheaper to put the trees close together and fence the whole orchard. Individual fencing allows works best for a few trees or trees covering a lot more land. Most of my early trees (10+ years old) I removed the early fencing. It is easier to work around the tree. The deer cause more damage now though.

That's what I'm leaning towards. SLN says 25 ft spacing on their trees though so it doesn't take long to fill a big area...
