Genesis 3/5 Drill

stlplots

Buck Fawn
Looking to purchase a new no till drill this spring. I have been looking for at the genesis 3 and 5. I plant about 5 to 8 acres of plots total, largest is 2 acres. Does anyone have any experience with these?

I don't but that's an interesting looking drill. Any idea of the cost on the 5.

How do you plan on pulling it? I would think even the 3 would work a UTV. 1000 lbs dry weight, add a hill and seed and you might make a utv grind to a stop

I have a 45 HP Kubota, not sure if its quite enough tractor for the 5. The 5 is $11,000 and the 3 is $7,000. Ideally a 5 foot unit would be best but with the size of the plots we plant I'm not sure its needed.

I have seen Jeff Sturgis pull the ATV model up and down hills hooked behind his Polaris

Were you able to find any reviews on the 3 foot? I haven't been able to find anything. Jeff Sturgis has blogged about using one, mostly in worked ground which defeats the purpose. He did have a segment drilling through tall grass then spraying but hasn't shown any results. I sent him an email to see how it worked out and have heard nothing but crickets.

I have no experience with either of them. With that being said I have a hard time believing either of those units are heavy enough to get the seed down to the desired depth. I believe that was one of the many problems early no till drills had in production agriculture.

Have not heard from anyone who has a 3 foot version, my concern is it won't be heavy duty enough over the long term. Does anyone have a 5' version or a different drill they like?

My suggestion would be to call the company and ask for references or go to Growing Deer Tv Facebook page and ask if Grant can direct you to some customers. These are pretty new yet and maybe not a lot users.

If you're going to spend $11,000, I'd find a Great Plains 606NT.

I took a close look at these at this years ATA show, they are heavy duty and built well, they are also plenty heavy enough. I dont think they will have any issue cutting into the soil, i have a 34 horse john deere and it wouldn't be able to lift the 5'. Im pretty certain i will be buying the 3' unit this spring. I plant about 6-7 acres a year and i like the idea of spraying only. The guys who designed these have it figured out.
