Fawn eater down

ruskbuckss

5 year old buck +
We got this coyote last week with a cable restraint on only the third day out. My son was bugging me everyday to put some sets out.

Way to go!

Like!
I don't mind a few around. Circle of life thing. But their running deer on my place every day lately.

Something has to change soon. I'm ready to call a guy that promised to trap hard after deer season and not come back until deer season was over again.

I liked that guy. ;)

We have a major problem with them. I dont have any hard numbers but on camera and through observations I see very few fawns. I threw out a dozen snares last week as well and had one chew out and caught another. I need to get another dozen or two out but its a start.

Nice. The coyotes are coming thru my property at home almost everyday. Coyote to deer tracks are 4 to 1. My friend thought he had one chew out last week too, I can't believe they can chew thru that cable. I think I received a bad batch one time and had 2 break out very easily. I bought some new ones and haven't lost any so far.

What type and size of cable?

I'm now using the 3/32 Dakota 7x7 cables that come pre dyed. I like them but don't care for the plastic whammy. The ones I had trouble with were Snare Shop 3/32 7x7. They actually pulled the cable out of the bottom swivel, not were they are supposed to break away. I called the company and the only excuse they could give me was they thought I might of boiled them to long. I wouldn't think that boiling them in water would make them that week, but I guess its possible.

I dont know your trapping regulations and since you refer to them as "cable restraints" I am guessing you cant set one where entanglement is likely?

Yes, We were just allowed to use cable restraints for the first time maybe 6 years ago. WI has one of the most strict guidelines to follow in the country. I actually like the guidelines on them. It is tough sometimes to find the perfect spot. Some of the rules are they cant be set near anything that would entangle, including shrubs I think larger than a 1/2 inch. They must be set 10-12 inches of the ground, the hoop has a set size, must have a deer hoof stop,a break away j hook of #285 so if by chance a deer would go thru they can just break it, also a relaxing washer that will not kill the animal but works like a choke collar on a dog leash and will loosen up I when they are not pulling. Every year I tell my neighbor that I have coyote traps set on our neighbors farm (1/4 mile away) so don't run your dogs back there. Two years ago he came to apologize for wrecking one of my cables. I caught a nice Weimaraner in one. He released the dog no problem with no injury from the cable restraint. I'm sure the worst part for the dog was that it had a shock collar on it and my neighbor was shocking the crap out of it for not coming back while it was in the cable:emoji_open_mouth:. I have not caught another Weim since.:emoji_stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

Yes those are pretty restrictive laws. The only thing that is going to help with chew outs in that situation is too check them as early in the day as possible, assuming that most coyotes will be caught at night. We basically have no snare regulations here other than we cant use them on public land until after the close of upland bird season. I use a break away stop on all my snares so that deer and cows will break free if they are caught.

I use cable restraints with relaxing locks. Its pretty cool to walk up to a yote just standing there like a dog on a chain. I think they fight it at first like a dog being broke to lead, then just accept it.

I started trapping for the first time this year on a buddy’s 93 acres close to where I live. Using all foot holds. So far to date we are at 14 coyotes, 3 coon and 5 possum. Glad I don’t have a coyote problem on my land.
