Fall Planting

Who is fall planting this year and what?

I'm going heavy on pears for no particular reason this fall to finish the big orchard up.

Planted a couple more Keiffer and Bartlett along the drive a month ago from TSC.

From Stark first week of November pears I should be getting;

2- Sugar Sweet
2- Anjou
2- Honey Sweet
1-Beurre Bosc
1- Seckle
1- Starkling Delicious
1-Red Sensation
1-Sunrise

From Cummins end of November;

2-Korean Giant on OHxF 97 grade #1
2- Seckle on OHxF 97 grade #1

and one Black Gold cherry grade #2

I've got my cages pre-made and I'm ready!

I'm waiting for trees in my nursery to go dormant. Then I'll start transplanting. Need to clear out space for new grafts in the spring.

I planted bare root trees to pots this past April. Now, I am planting to their permanent location;
1 Florina
1 Winecrisp
1 Wickson crab
1 Franklin crab, all from Cummins.
1 Snapp Stayman, from local nursery on sale - I could not resist.

I grow my grafts in 3 gal rootmaker pots and we have already started planting a few of the 15 apples.

Have total:
White limbertwig
Black limbertwig
Red royal limbertwig
Myers green limbertwig
Ashford's limbertwig
Watt's limbertwig
Weaver's red sweet limbertwig
Ozark Pippin
Dulas beauty
Harrison
Magnum bonum
Red winter Jon
Hewe's crab
Dobbins apple
Virginia Beauty

I planted three of my "homemade" trees last weekend, two Korean giants and an unknown pear from my Fathers yard in Iowa , All three are on seedlings that i started from the wild pears around my place. I have a bunch of Sawtooth oak and a bunch of some type of Red oak growing in raised beds that i will probably plant between bow and rifle season.

25 in the ground so far with 10 more to go.

I have a few trees to plant this fall/winter. A few of the apple seedling that I started under lights last winter and grafted early this spring took. I'll plant them this fall. I bought 4 mulberry trees last winter and grew them in 3 gal RB2s on my deck this summer. I'll plant them this fall. I have a few Jujube that I started from sprouts that are large enough to plant this fall.

Thanks,

Jack

I finished planting in September, before bow season started. I needed to provide supplemental water twice, but now the fall rains have begun. This year's autumn planting consisted of ~20 late-drop Sawtooth, ~20 English-Bur hybrids, ~15 Crabapple (seed-propagated from a local tree with desirable characteristics), ~20 hybrid Chestnut that I've babied for two years, and ~30 Siberian Peashrub. I'm keeping the DCO to plant as two-year-olds next year and hoping that the Hazelnut will come back if I overwinter them in the garage (frost damage back in May knocked some beautiful seedlings on their butts). Next Spring I'm limiting myself to some fruit trees and a bunch of chainsaw work; this past April was insane with planting. Next fall will resume with some of the seedlings I start this winter. Hopefully including SWO, if I can find some nuts from a Northern source (hint, hint).
