Double secret rut spot

Top right corner :)
Named "double secret rut spot". It's a new stand I put in and manipulated the area so the deer had to come by. Not so much use since. It doesn't get much use until the Bucks are running.

Hopefully this is a sign I made a good choice.. This stand will be hunted a max of 2 times this year...

sweet buck bud, good luck !

Great buck Bill. Good luck!

Hard to argue when you get 2 nice deer thru the same spot in just a few days time. Without getting too nosy.....can you put together a "how to" as to how you found the location and what you did to make it better? Don't go stomping around with a camera....bad idea. You got some sort of diagram, topo/sat map or something to help draw us a little better picture of what you have hear and what you did to improve it?

I would be interested in what all you did as well

15 acre patch of timber. Neighbors beans to the south. Tree plantings and native grass to the north.
The green square looks open but it's very over grown and hard for a man to walk through.

We never go in to hunt, only pick the west edge. So this will be a hardly ever used spot. Most of the time deer freely walk the grasses in and around the timber. When the rut starts the Does don't like to be in the open as much because they get pestered. That's when we noticed the Bucks cruise this timber all the time. Red is cleared access. Yellow is cut deer sidewalk. Orange is the stand. The Timber is not big enough for me to build blockades strictly from timber so the white is snow fence or 5 strand barbless wire. I don't like using fence over cut trees but I'll do what I have to. The white triangle to the south is really an enclosed area I don't want deer in. It's where my stink will blow with a N something wind. The two southern points of the enclosure are on drainages the deer don't like anyway because they have steep banks.

Looks like you created a killer funnel.=) Using snow fencing seems like a great idea. Do you know how long it lasts?

I don't. It was on sale at Menard's this spring, so I picked up a few rolls.

Man that is badass. Just another reason to love blockades of any type. Can't wait to see how this thread progresses through the fall.

I love how you have the perfect wind setup already. Nice work man.

Looking good Bill.....I like the way you have helped manipulate the situation to your favor. I think sometimes the most difficult part to deer hunting is simply narrowing down the path they will take. Have you noticed other buck sign in this area before? I know on my place cruising bucks tend to not make/leave as much sign as what I refer to as more resident bucks will. I also have noticed that some areas like what you describe tend to not have a pronounced deer trail - and without closer observation you may easily dismiss the area as not having deer activity. This is where cams can really help you locate a buck or deer in general that you may be currently overlooking.

The snow fence you are using. I have a few questions. #1 - how are you supporting it? You just fasten to tree or stringing wire or actually setting T posts? #2 - how high are you setting it? Most snow fence is like 3 or 4 feet tall, but if it is placed on the ground does it pose enough of a discouragement for the deer to simply walk around it? My other concern would be other smaller critters movements.

Sorry for not responding, been with extended family today and it looks like I will be until fish would normally have to be thrown out :)

Never much buck sign in here at all. A few rubs in the spring but zero signs of scraps and I never really see single beds.
This is a doe hole from my experience and the Bucks only cruise it.

Snow fence is about 4 foot tall and fastened to trees. Some nails and just wired to others. It self supports pretty well. Most of it is setting on the ground. Deer don't seem to like jumping it. But I didn't run much more than 100 foot before switching to 5 strand barbless wire. I need to take a pic. But we're not holding cows. So if you don't have a post you need to/can tie all the strands together. This keeps larger "deer" type critters from being able to step through the strands of long runs. The fence will sway but with ties but deer can't step between strands.

The little critters are on their own. It's a tough world out there :). And their little so they seem to slip through stuff.

Being in farm country as I am I hate the idea of wire in the woods. I have so much old rusty and beaten down woven wire fence it isn't funny. I understand the reason why, but I just hate it. I like the idea of the snow fence because it is more visible and would be less likely to remain long term and harm trees and the like. I know some folks use the wire to support cut saplings and the like to create a more natural looking fence as well. I was just curious.

Looks like you have a great kill spot, Bill. Good luck with Fat B. and the big, tall-tine one.

He's (Fat B) actually quite high on my list I've let nicer antlered deer walk but he's 5 this year and taking up a bed and big enough to defend it.

The does are starting to use this area now. Hope the plan comes together...

This guy may be on to something. It's easier to wait for the ladies by just taking a nap at the pinch point rather than running all around.
