Buck down "Not"

But if I wanted to deal with a deer in warm weather he was broadside at 25 yards. I just kept the camera in my hand and left the Xbow sit. But I'm considering this a successful hunt because he was there for the plucking.

Lots of history with this guy. He was the target tonight as he has been posing for daylight pics at this camera location. Wind said go and with a 20 degree drop in temp from yesterday I had to go. I'll probably kick myself when I have tag soup, but for some reason I just didn't want to end my season after 2 hours.

I know I'm nuts!

Sorry the vid is so crappy. The sun was hitting the lens.

Any idea how old that deer is? Seemed like he was skinny but had a deep chest.

Yup, that's nuts. That's a really nice buck. What do you have in that field?

I'm guessing him at 4. Last year he was a bit to big to be 2. Thinking maybe a late born fawn as he always looks to be right on the border. Lots of late winter pics last year http://habitat-talk.com/index.php?posts/129742/

I terminated clover and put in brassica's. They were a bust and it was being taken over with foxtail. I disked it Friday and broadcast oats and rye the same day. Rain last night so my fingers are crossed...

If you made me choose I would have him at 3.5 only because nothing definitive says he is older. Be able to better tell in 3 wks.

I say this being 300 miles away but I would have to let him go as well knowing that he could blow into something dreams are made of. I am of the thought I would rather shoot a 130 5yr old than a 160 3yr old

Really demonstrates either restraint or a level of hunting maturity.

Nice!

I thinking Alzheimer's, never really thought about shooting him. Just kind of mad that the light and my zoom in and out was messing up the video. Booner is right, he's a great deer but if he gets a year or more on him he could be a dream even if it's not realized by me.

Nice deer. IMO I dont think he is over 3.5 yrs old either. Good things come to those who wait! MO only has a 1 buck limit?

No in MO yo can shoot one with a bow before rifle and one after. Then one with a rifle making it 3 for the season.
I have a self imposed limit of 1. I do always say I'll shoot a second if a freak of nature shows up but that never seems to happen...

I am leaning towards nuts ... :emoji_astonished:

If had to bet I'd put my money on 3.5, but sure a DARN nice 3.5!

Think you made the right call on giving him a pass... but as for the general comment of not wanting the season to end after only 2 hours, I'm not sure I follow on that one... fill the tag early and you get back to habitat work-related tasks more quickly! :emoji_wink:

Commented after watching just the 1st video... watching the 2nd, might bump that 3.5 to 4. Belly doesn't look to have dropped much and he doesn't have the grizzled look of an older buck, but man that brisket is hanging down quite a bit for a younger deer. Looking at the post you shared from last year he looked pretty healthy then too.

Looked like he was pretty focused on finding you right there at the end... hope you see him again some day down the road! :emoji_thumbsup:

Good buck for sure. I think he's 4.5 based on last years rack. That would have been quite a set of antlers for a 2 year old.

If a buck is going to hit 170 he has to put some extra inches along the way. Did you have a score tabulated in your head when he was walking away?

Bill dont want you getting in trouble. They changed the regulations last year.
LIMITS
Check your permit and hunting season for information about limits. Also check to determine if antler point restrictionsapply to the area where you are hunting.

Antlered deer limits
  • You may take only two antlered deer during the archery and firearms deer hunting seasons combined.
  • Archery hunters may take only one antlered deer before the November portion of firearms deer hunting season.
  • Only one antlered deer may be taken during firearms deer hunting season (all portions combined).
  • If you are drawn to participate in a managed hunt, you may take as many antlered deer as allowed at that specific hunt. Deer taken at a managed hunt do not count toward your firearms or archery season limits.
They changed the regulations last year.

Wow! Congrats on letting him walk! You certainly have some self-restraint Bill, especially for it being your target deer. If he does survive, another year wont hurt him. Hes got a lot going for him. Too bad his G2's arent bigger but his 4s make up for it.

Good things come to those who wait.

Bill, you're a tease! I thought maybe you got a swing at "Lucky". The deer you saw is a nice deer, but nothing like what you know to be out there......or what you know you can grow. This is a case where information and the value of a trail cam come in real handy!

Catch and release. He'll be a booner next year.

Gross 145 to 150 I'm usually pretty close with field judging.

I like that first change!
No APR's but I think he would make it :)
