What are your plans with the cuttings?

Did he update the site? A week or so ago it still showed everything as out of stock from last season. I need to order some more dappled willow to fill in my screen.

Yeah its all updated now.

Bueller ... 1st time buying the dappled willow for screening. What was your experience and how did the growth habit form?

Did you plant in full sun or any in shade?

I planted them through black plastic in sand just last spring. Some never "woke" up after planting. Most of the ones that did, survived the summer and put on anywhere for 6"-18" of vertical growth. The nice part is that I had multiple sprouts from the cutting and branches forming off of each sprout. Definitely more of a bushy shrub form. Planted in nearly full sun but some of my best ones may have received a touch of shade as they were on the end of my planting nearest the tree line. I'm hoping they take off this year.

Did the deer chew on them at all ?

So far dappled willows are my favorite shrub with button bush being the second. The deer tear any unprotected willow up on my place.
I have some hybrid willows that are unprotected and the deer keep them shrubs.

Thanks Tree Spud, every little bit helps :)

bueller - Sand is tough. I wish more of them would have made it for you.

For those that did, if you can stand the thought of it you should cut them back to a 6" stub before the wake up in the spring. Use what you cut off to plant more (if it's big enough). After cutting them back they will sprout way more branches. It seems weird, but it's the way to go :)

I don't know if I have the guts to do that. Maybe after year 2 ;)

Try it on just one :)

Sent from my 8g phone.

Not to highjack the thread but what willow will do average to above average in the central sandbox in a lower area which may dry out in late summer ?

Big Snow Man - Sand is difficult, that's for sure. I'm not aware of any willow that does better in sand than others (there sure could be, I'm just not aware of it). My suggestion would be to use black plastic, as large of a piece as you can stand, and maybe even put something on top of the plastic wood chips, grass clippings, anything to keep the sun off and the temp down.

I have light soil at my farm (not sand) and have never seen it 'dry' under black plastic that I can recall. The ground is always evaporating moisture, the plastic traps it, and the trees use it.

Hope that helps a little?

Thanks,

-John

Big Snow Man, when I was doing some research prior to ordering cuttings for my screen I found that dappled willows are becoming more and more common as a landscape shrub. I found several reviews of them doing well after on dry sites after getting established. I planted most of mine through black plastic last spring and never watered them. We had a VERY dry 3-4 week period late summer and a large majority made it through. I also planted a couple of them right into a "bowl" in the sand created by removing a shovel or two of soil. These looked great and were actually outpacing many of the black plastic ones until that late summer drought hit and took them out :(.

Thanks did you use hormone when planting and if you did which one ?

Do your dappled willows get browsed or rubbed, or both? I'm hoping to take my cage down once mine get established.

Currently all the dappled willows I've planted are inside a 3 acre gallager type double electric fence. But based on other trees that are in the open new shoots will be a preferred browse.

I'm going to take Johns advice above and cut some of them off at about 6 inches. I've done this on hybrid willow that were rubbed and they send up lots of new shoots that make it difficult for a deer to reach the main trunk to rub it. Don't know if it will work with dappled willows but with hybrids they eventually make their own cage of sorts.
