Anyone tried sequin?

The Wildlife Group sold me mine in the Fall. In Zone 6, Fall is a good time to plant.

So, from what I am seeing....these are no longer around to be purchased, or at least no one seems to sell them anymore?

They quit shipping once the trees are no longer dormant. You can place an order for next winter through the wildlife group. You could call and see if they have any more potted plants.

Here's another picture of one of my two year old sequins

Nice looking trees! thanks for posting pics now I have something to compare mine to. I planted some from seed this spring and they seem to be doing ok.

Does anyone have any seed they would want to get rid of this fall?

If not, I will likely order some seedlings. ....unless someone knows of a nut source?

I have a few burrs this year but only a couple. I've never heard of them before the wildlife group started selling them in 2012 so mine aren't but two years old. They do love root maker pots though. Most that I got this year were 1-2 feet but few I got were really small so I've been babying them in root makers this year. Most of those are now over 2 ft and some are beginning to bloom.

I bought some seed from Empire last year and was very happy with their seeds. I ordered the wildlife hybrid seeds and they are a mixture of Seguin, Chinese and Allegheny Chinapin.

Here are some pics of a few I grew in pots.

This one was really small and broken off. Now it's going good.

The Wildlife Group no longer offers this tree

I called them recently to inquire about them

Any idea on where to buy trees/seed?

I know that Jack has had success with bare root in 3 gallon RBII and wanted to give them a try

Similar to others,my experience with Schumacher Seed was not particularly good

Wow! I'm glad I got in under the wire last year. If I knew they were going to stop selling them, I would have bought more. The only place I could find nuts was Schumacher and you know how bad that went. They were the wrong nuts, had mold, and had zero germination.

I got about 5 or 6 nuts that look viable off my sequins growing on the deck this year. I'm going to keep them at home again next year and see if I can get some more. I think there is one burr left that looks large enough to have viable nuts in it. I'll see how successful I am at starting them from nuts this year.

By the way, I collected lots of Allegheny Chinquapin nuts this year. They are similar but not resistant to the blight. They only produce 1 round nut per burr where the Seguins have 3 nuts per burr like Chestnuts. While Allegheny Chinquapins are susceptible to the blight, it doesn't hurt them as bad as a wildlife tree as it does chestnuts. Chestnuts with the blight usually wont' product nuts. When Allegheny chinquapins get blight, they die back and then regrow from the roots. They form more of a bush than a tree and they produce nuts in just a couple years when small. If you need a few AC nuts, let me know.

Thanks,

Jack

thanks,Jack

ACs have done well for me in my arid, dry region andy sandy loam soils

I have several trees started as bare root in 11/14 that are 7-8 feet tall and producing well

Some started producing LAST year at the end of their second growing season in the ground!!

I planted 6 of them 3 years ago. I haven't really treated them very good. They were crowded out with weeds but they're still alive and healthy. They're still pretty small but all but 1 made a few nuts this year. I wish they were 10 footers.

They are not selling them anymore? Some of mine are doing great, some others are alive but not really takign off. Maybe I need to start babying them more!! Mine did produce this year.

Yes, I'd be interested to know why they are not selling them any more...

Here were mine back in July. Some were only 2ft, but these have seemed to do better. I will inquire about them with Allen.

Those are much larger and more productive than mine. How old are they? Mine did produce some viable nuts this year that I collected to propagate, but many of the burs did not produce nuts. Likely just too young.

Thanks,

Jack

I think you got your a year after I did? I have had them for about 3 yrs? I have I think about 8. 3 are big, 5 are still only about 3-4 ft but do produce. I need to put down weed protection, they get absolutely covered by weeds.

It might be 2 years. I got mine last November, put them in 3 gal RB2s and kept them in my cold room over winter. I brought them out and put them under lights a little early. One of the 4 never leafed out and died. The other three leafed out well. They didn't grow a lot but some. One of them produced a few nuts that I collected in the middle of August. I think this was because I woke them up early. I have one full size bur left that has not opened yet.

If you had yours for 3 years, they are probably 2 years ahead of mine.

Thanks,

Jack
