Any Morels?

I live in Northern Kentucky and just purchased 52 acres last year. This weekend I plan to hunt for Morels. But I didn't learn about Morels till about 3 weeks ago. So, I'm excited to see if I have any. Any one else finding any, and where do you live? Wish me luck!!!

I'm finding them in Kansas. I tend to spend more time looking up then down. I look for broken or sick trees and then look under them.
Good luck!

I've got quite a few dead ash and other trees, and we have plenty of may apples, looking forward to what I may find.

Try this site. It will keep you up to date on when locals are finding them and you can ask specific questions to your area; like "what trees are producing?"...

Patrick,
All my family hunts morels. My oldest son probably has the fever more than anyone else. When he was very young he wanted a book by Larry "Tree" Lonik The Curious Morel. I recommend you get that book as a starter. Also, use a mesh bag, like an onion or potato sack. This allows the morel spores to seed your farm for future fun. Good luck.

Folks are finding them like crazy here in So. IL

Great, thanks for the info, Ghillie hunter. All this advice is helpful for this newby. I've also been watching lots of youtube videos on it. Seems like quite the phenomenom. Also, I learned Michigan has a yearly festival in May. If I was not going on vacation then, I think I would attend it!!!

Any reason to be in the outdoors is a good one. :)

Morels are strange. Every locale seems to have a "favorite" host tree. In NE MO I find them around hedge, sycamore, river birch, and the old stand-by, elm. When I had my farm in KY we found them around hickory and poplar. Where you find one, study the area and figure what they are growing under, and look for more. It's usually pretty easy to figure out.....

Looks like they can be had for $55ish a pound fresh.
I think It would be worth buying a pound to try them. I can't believe I spent my whole life in the outdoors in northeast Texas and never realized our wild mushrooms could be so good. I saw a chicken of the woods two years ago and didn't know what I had stumbled across.

Heck, I just learned about hen of the woods... I have seen those about every year of my life in the woods and didn't know they were edible. I will be collecting some mushrooms this year....!
Anyone have some good recipes? I don't want to waste great mushrooms with just sautéing them with butter.

Finding them here in central Missouri as well!

Is chicken of the woods and hen of the woods the same thing? I see these two terms and were not sure if they were two separate species or just synonyms.

Two separate fungi

They are just starting to find some grays in southern Ohio in the last week, haven't heard of anyone finding anything in my area yet. The next two weeks should get them popping here, I've always had the best luck around dead elms right as the bark starts to slip.

They are definitely up in NE MO. Wife and I filled 2 five gallon buckets today! After the last two years being a bust, it was fun!

Found a couple yesterday.
