Any idea what this is?

Started seeing this a couple of years ago on one apple tree and as far as I could tell it really didn’t cause any problems. It’s really noticeable this time of year after the leaves come off. This year I’m seeing this on several trees - apples and pears. Any idea what this could be? It is soft and you can flake it off easily with your fingers. Appears to be either a fungus or some type of insect egg mass? Thanks

I would guess some type of slime mold.

When you flake it off, is it dry and powdery or wet ?? Do you see any small "grains" that could be eggs ??

Appears dry and powdery. Didn’t notice anything that looked like eggs.
