    Dolgo versus dolgo seedlings

The small purple fruit is from grafted dolgo as what is seen when we purchase dolgo from nurseries in the upper Midwest. I suspect most of these come from Bailey’s. The larger fruit is from a dolgo seedling. I have 3-4 of these seedlings with larger fruit and I also have dolgo seedlings with...

Fund Raiser for National Fish Decoy Asdociation

Here is a fish decoy on EBay as part of the fund raiser for the spring fish decoy show and competition in Perham, Minnesota. Fish decoys are used in northern states for winter spearing. Some are just collectibles and some are workers. These decoys, specifically miniatures, have become a hobby...

Why do wild crab or larger wild apples predominate?

I posted this on a smaller deer hunting forum and am looking for a wider range of opinions. I see 95% wild crabs in my area. Perhaps this discussion could lead to better choices for apple tree plantings in each area. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

    Foliar Fertilizers

Does anyone have experience with these on a Foodplot, fruit plot, or commercial basis? I know they are used on some Honeycrisp. Do they enhance sweetness or nutrients on apples or foodplots? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

    Fish Spearing Decoys?

Does anyone else carve or collect these? I hadn’t made any for almost 30 years, but started making them again this last winter. I try to use no power tools and have been mostly making mini decoys. Some I trade for and I buy a few. The crude red and white on the lower left was my first decoy...

    Siberian pear?

When do they drop? Do deer eat them? I have two I purchased from St Lawrence Nurseries. I ignored them for years, but finally put a weed barrier around them and they started to grow. I could top work them in a year or two, but they are planted on the edge of sanctuary and an area that I don’t...

Two Ways I have Fenced Apple Trees

The old way was aluminum window screen for mice protection. Then I used about 10 feet of 2x4 inch welded wire around the tree. I prefer the older welded wire which was a heavier gauge than what I can find now. The welded wire kept rabbits out. In this case, branch growth opened up the top of...

    Red Dolgo Trial

Ryan from Blue Hill sorted out some red stemmed dolgo (seedling) rootstock for me. He said they ran about 1/250 rootstocks. I planted twenty of them on my best soils. Also added some root gel and fenced and caged them. I might end up with red splendor type crabs, maybe a dolgo sized crab with...

    Apple Trees for Deer

These are the trees I would recommend for feeding deer from August and well into February. This location is where USDA zone 3 and 4 meet. We can get into the specific discussions a bit later if needed. The trees are hardy and relatively disease free. I have lots of CAR here. Chestnut crab...

Is anyone growing it? How hardy is it? Susceptible to cedar apple rust? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Kerr on rootstock other than B118

Does anyone have an older Kerr crab on dolgo or Anty? Even on other rootstock? If of bearing age, how tall are they? My Kerr on B118 have been ok for human use. They are short and easy to pick. I would prefer a taller tree for wildlife. I can say the same for Liberty and centennial. Perhaps...

    Cider/ wild yeast question

Will wild yeast survive the freezing of sweet cider? I have just about finished my fresh cider and like it’s changes after2-5 weeks in the fridge. Should I add a bit of this to the frozen cider after thawing, or will wild yeast be in the frozen cider? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

    New Press/Grinder, different cider

There are more tiny apple chunks with this system. I might switch to a smaller mesh bag. The cider was in the fridge for about two weeks and seems to have fermented a bit from the natural yeast. I like it! I went with the stainless system like Aero. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
