    My experience with pears mirrors chickenlittle's. I now let pear rootstock grow for a year before grafting to it and have much better success.

    Russet Apples?

    Could be a Roxbury Russet. They also look a lot like my Keener Seedling (Rusty Coat) apple that's still holding on the tree. You definitely need to do so grafting.

    Arkansas Black and Victoria Limbertwigs are dropping here in southcentral Pa. Keener Seedlings, Brushy Mt. Limbertwigs & Gold Rush are still hanging tight. And the old reliable wild Sinkhole apple is starting it's slow drop which will last into Jan.
