    Bebb's Oak for yard

Hi, The Bebb's oaks I planted have done well. I have babied them (big mulch ring, some fertilizer, watered in). Growth has exceeded my expectations. I planted another one in June of 2020. It put on over 2 feet this year. The source I bought them from sold me containerized 4-1/2 foot trees. The...

Input requested (WI): Waushara vs Marquette vs Adams Counties

I think they are looking at 3 areas: S of Coloma, NE of Wautoma, and near the Castle Rock / Petenwell flowages. Looks like a few CWD cases in NW Adams County. Only 1 in Marquette, 0 in Waushara.

Input requested (WI): Waushara vs Marquette vs Adams Counties

A family member is looking at acreage in this part of Wisconsin. Just wondering if anyone has any thoughts or insights in differences in hunting regs, local laws, taxes, etc. between these three counties. Thanks.

    Fighting RCG (Reed Canary Grass)

I was able to get rid of about 3 acres of RCG in a flood plain / poorly drained area after a lot of work. To exhaust the roots, I let it grow taller and mowed it just before seed-set (end of June, zone 5a). I let that portion dry, then burned it at the end of July. That made a heck of a lot of...

Concordia Oaks and Swamp / Bur Hybrids

Kelly Tree Farm sells graded trees for a reasonable price. You can get grade 3' - 4' swamp bur oaks. "3RP3". Any future plantings by me will be larger trees. It's awfully tough to get 3" - 6" trees up over the weeds, but I suppose one could pot them and nurse them along on the back porch.

    Making land more affordable

Wetland mitigation is very expensive, but could be profitable in 5 - 10 years. It involves engineering work to make structural improvements to degraded wetlands. The improved wetlands are sold as credits to offset wetlands that are filled in by developers. I know of a conservstion minded...

What browse do deer eat in northeast woods (NY)

My first question would be: what are your goals? Why are you making changes to your land? Timber improvement? Habitat improvement? Access? Get multiple opinions from multiple sources about what would help/hurt achieve your goals. I would carefully research best practices to manage your land...

Wisconsin Members - where's your "dream location" for land?

Hey everyone, life got away from me for a month. In response to the mature forest comment, I've dealt with bad invasives in the past with limited success. 'Healthy habitat' would have been a better choice of words. To me, 'healthy habitat' means diversity and minimal invasives. That means no...

Wisconsin Members - where's your "dream location" for land?

Grouse aren't a deal breaker. I used to Grouse hunt near the St. Croix. Lots of fun. Door County is intriguing for sure. Probably one of the overlooked fisheries in the state. Do you hunt close to the Mink River? Great to hear about all of the interest in Waupaca County. I'll have to check it out.

Wisconsin Members - where's your "dream location" for land?

Ok, I could go as high as 5k per acre for the right property. Would have to be well drained, healthy / mature forest for 5k per acre.

For now let's pretend money isn't under consideration. I'm thinking 1 - 3k per acre.

Wisconsin Members - where's your "dream location" for land?

We're selling our place and looking for new land 3 - 5 yrs down the road. No rush. I'm looking for: 1) Good hunting options. Not just deer. Grouse, waterfowl, and turkeys would also be sweet. 2) An area not yet affected by CWD. 3) Other recreational opportunities for the kids - nearby water...

Improving habitat and removing invasive brush?

One other idea that sounded good... go after them in late February. This is when they are the weakest because all of their resources are going into budding out. Painting the stump with concentrated gly (minimum 25%) will still kill them. And there's lesz risk to native vegetation.
