    Habitat out loud

I think a 5 foot fence would work fine, but you might end up with a little browsing on the edges when the deer stand up on their hind legs to reach some ROD. There's so much browse available on your place that I really don't think it will be a huge issue. I also think you could get away with...

    grafting crabapples

I've had much better luck bench grafting than topworking existing trees. My topworking success is much higher when I graft to a branch or leader that is the same diameter as the scion. It takes practice to get good at grafting, so I recommend practicing on a few branches you cut down before...

    I would never have thought….

My dad was guiding my son this weekend in SE MN and they had a hawk swoop down and hit his Dave Smith turkey decoy. The hawk is probably lucky my son was the only one with a gun that day because my dad really likes that decoy, and he doesn't want it all scratched up.

    Habitat out loud

I'm pretty confident that your ROD fencing plan will work really well.

    New Neighbors / New problems

I would be upset if someone was cutting trees on my side of the fence, and I would certainly talk to them about that. I wouldn't even bring up the fact that the fence may be off the property line by a couple inches though since I doubt survey companies can be more accurate than that. I agree...

    2024 tree prices

I've ordered dolgo seedlings from Chief River Nursery in the past and had great luck with them. It has been a while though - probably 2018 or so, but they were really nice seedlings that did well.

    2024 tree prices

Yellow River Nurseries in Marshfield Wisconsin. I purchased 20 seedlings for $3.95 each. I believe this is the first time I've ordered from Yellow River Nursery, but it was the only place I could find Dolgo seedlings at a reasonable price. I'll use most as rootstock for grafting, but I'll...

    2024 tree prices

500 white spruce and 100 white plum bare root trees arrived yesterday from the MN DNR nursery. I also received 20 Dolgo crabapple seedlings from a private nursery that will be used for my grafting efforts this spring. It will be a busy stretch coming up since my kids' turkey season opened...

    What's for dinner?

Natural selection will weed out the mushroom foragers with poor mushroom ID skills!

    What's for dinner?

What would cause the shellfish or mushrooms to be unsafe to eat? I know that some bodies of water here are impaired from pollution and you are only supposed to eat one meal per month depending on species. I've never heard of any issues with mushrooms though, assuming you pick the right...

Scallops are awesome. What's the food safety authority?

What should I plant on this field edge:

I'd plant some apple trees between your pines and the neighbors alfalfa. Early dropping apples will be great September spots to catch a buck grabbing a bite before he hits the alfalfa next door. In 10 years, the apple trees will be large enough that the bucks will make scrapes under the branches.

Stock Market is the bottom in?

Joe Biden revoked the permit for the Keystone Pipeline on his first day in office, so he most definitely deserves some blame for the high oil prices. OPEC cuts would have a lower impact in the US if we could efficiently transport oil produced in Canada to the US.

    Got a turkey

An 11" beard is really nice, so I'm guessing it must be an older bird.

    Got a turkey

Nice bird. How big were his spurs?

What should I plant on this field edge:

Are you trying to prevent people from seeing into your woods? Or are there houses in the woods and you are trying to prevent them from seeing the alfalfa field? The best visual screen would be a conifer since you can't see through that any time of year. White spruce works well for me, but I...

    Habitat out loud

I planted a bunch of white spruce on my place the spring after I had my place logged. I did it more to prevent future buck rubbing damage, but you have it much tougher since the deer will want to eat your cedars. I think your plan is definitely worth a shot, especially since the seedling...

    Open Fields Doctrine

I bet the poachers would love it if they knew there was no legal way for a game warden to access the private land they are on. I really don't think that 99.9% of the game wardens would waste their time randomly going after a guy who was following all the laws. If they received a tip from the...

1/4 acre native species controlled burn at my residence.

How much did you have to pay to have that 1/4 acre burned? I've always been impressed with how a burned prairie looks long term, but I get pretty nervous around fire. There were a few local fire departments out conducting controlled burns in SE MN yesterday on CRP acreage. It is pretty...

    Chief River Nursery

I've ordered seedling apple trees from them in the past and I was happy with the quality.
