What is eating my apple tree?

They like to eat my elderberries. Colorful and destructive little bastards.

The life of a young apple tree in bear country

I lost about 20 trees last week from the bears. Snapped them at the base and did all kinds of damage. ****ing bears.

The life of a young apple tree in bear country

I just hope I can get my trees to the point where the bear damage is manageable. it doesn’t help that I have a lot of multi-varietal trees with individually grafted branches. When they rip a branch off I lose a variety and it stings a bit even if they don’t kill the tree. I have an efence...

The life of a young apple tree in bear country

That video is great. I feel your pain but I am less forgiving. I’m trying desperately to keep bears off of my 1 through 8 year old apple and pear trees with sporadic success. I just wish they would only damage them when fruit is present. Otherwise I think they are mostly being assholes.

    Apple borer

The bark here was removed by me, there was a hole in the center that was circular. There’s another circular hole above and to the left of the damaged bark.

    Apple borer

Will this tree survive? The top looks fine. It is staked. It will be painted with permethrin and sevin in the paint.

    Apple borer

Five of my best trees were found to have holes in them from borers yesterday. I’d never noticed any damage from them in the past but maybe that’s because I never knew what the frass looked like. I finally got these trees (4-7 years old) to the point of bearing and now they have big holes in...

    UTV Purchase

Love my rtv 400. Bought it with 50 lightly used hours. I have beaten the snot out of it and had zero problems. It is NOT fast, max speed 25mph (feels more like 15) and not a ton of power but for 6k I got a great, versatile, functional, handy, tough vehicle with a tight turning radius. Just a...

Hybrid Willows: What am I Doing Wrong?

Agree with rit and tree spud. I’ve grown a lot of willows from cuttings. weed competition and adequate soil moisture are critical. Must use some type of weed mat. And it’s just as critical to have only 1-2 buds above ground. I’ve never used rooting hormone and my success rate is very good. I...

    Bucksnort Franken Tree

Blooms on the red field are pretty purty, too. Mine was in full bloom two days ago, regretfully I didn’t take any pictures.

    Slow grafts or poor success?

I’ve never soaked my grafts (although I will soak cuttings before planting) but I seal all my scions with canning wax to keep them from drying out and this seems to help me a lot.

    Slow grafts or poor success?

Common occurrence on my grafts in most years. It always seems my scions wake up after the rootstock. Don’t give up !!!
