    My experience with pears mirrors chickenlittle's. I now let pear rootstock grow for a year before grafting to it and have much better success.

    Russet Apples?

    Could be a Roxbury Russet. They also look a lot like my Keener Seedling (Rusty Coat) apple that's still holding on the tree. You definitely need to do so grafting.
